Clusters: A Discussion of Technologies

Ken Moreau, Compaq Computer Corporation

This presentation covers the terminology and technology behind clustering, independent of platform and vendor. It discusses different clustering styles, systems interconnects, storage interconnects, lock managers, cluster file systems and disaster tolerance. It then goes into detail on how to evaluate specific cluster products across the entire market, to choose the best one for your business requirements.

Ken Moreau has been with Compaq for over 21 years. He started with Digital Equipment as an engineer in 1979, developing software for computer based instruction, including becoming the Project Leader for IVIS. He then transferred to the OpenVMS Engineering team, and spent 6 years working with VAX DEBUG. In 1990 he transferred to the Field as a Pre-Sales Systems Engineer in South Florida, specializing in multi-platform extreme high availability solutions. He is OpenVMS Certified, an MCSE, and is working on his ASE.

Active Directory Design

Milt Beebe is a BSEE & MCT/MCSE instructor with GSE Systems. Mr. Beebe has over 30 years of technical experience in the computer industry specific to repair, hardware design, and instruction. His operating system background originated with VMS and Unix, but he has been developing and delivering courses concerning and interoperating with Microsoft Windows NT since 1992.

AlphaServer GS320, GS160 and GS80 Technical Overview

On May 16th, 2000 Compaq announced the newest members of the High Performance AlphaServer Family based on the industry performance leading Alpha EV67 RISC microprocessor. The AlphaServer GS320, GS160, GS80 systems are designed for typical commercial workloads with high 24x365 availability, scalability and flexibility by enabling Tru64 UNIX partitioning & OpenVMS Galaxy to be running on the same box at the same time! This DECUS ESILUG session will cover AlphaServer GS320, GS160, GS80 system hardware configuration and design features as well as operating system functionality from a technical perspective. Performance information for the new GS systems will be included during the presentation.

A tour of the Washington, DC Benchmark Center following the session will include a closer look at the new AlphaServer GS160, as well as all other members of the AlphaServer family of systems.

Spamming: What It Is and What to Do About It

Spamming has become a commercial industry. There are books telling you everything you have to know to make a "successful" spam, and there are companies that will spam millions of people for a fee (usually a few hundred dollars).

This talk will address issues like: the spam problem, what to do and what not to do, and how to trace a message's history.

OpenVMS Update

This session will cover features planned in OpenVMS v7.3 and will review the OpenVMS Roadmaps for AlphaServer, AlphaStation, VAX, Cluster, Galaxy, StorageWorks, Databases, eBusiness, and System Management.

Configuring TCP/IP for High Availability

This session describes the configuration of some key components of the TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS V5.0 product. As an aid to learning the components are presented in the context of an over-arching example - a high-availability cluster configuration. The components of the product which are discussed are BIND, Internet Cluster, NFS, LPD, SMTP and DHCP server.

Storage Area Networks Up Close

SAN Technology - What is it? Why is it the hottest technology in the industry today? Scott Bollar, a storage consultant with Compaq, will discuss the promises of SAN technology, what is available today, and what we should see over the next several months. He will also discuss the reasons why CIO's and CEO's are considering storage technology as an equally important decision as server platform. He will cover the major players in this technology and also look at industry standards driving organizations.

How has Compaq positioned itself in the Storage Area Network world? What technologies do we have and what are the current solutions available? Scott will discuss the StorageWorks Enterprise Network Storage Architecture, Compaq's Fibre Channel line of products, as well as Compaq's new storage solutions such as Remote Data Replication Manager, Enterprise Volume Manager, and Enterprise Backup technology to name a few.
