Monday, December 4, 2006: Laura Chappell

We're arranging for catering a dinner at the meeting.

Laura Chappell of the Protocol Analysis Institute will offer ESILUG a look at Windows and Linux network security tools. She'll show the new honeypot/IDS solution she's working with, wireless Wireshark, keyloggers, forensic tool sets, and related tools.

Ken will deliver two presentations he gave at the 2006 HP Technology Forum. Ken does a great job of presenting a non-marketing, practical comparison of related technologies from multiple vendors. Those who've been around ESILUG a few years will remember Ken's survey of cluster technologies which he presented to us in November 2000

A Survey of Processor Technologies

This seminar surveys the processor technologies available in the industry today, including HP Alpha, Intel Itanium 2, AMD Opteron, HP PA-RISC, Intel Pentium, IBM Power5 and Sun UltraSPARC. You will learn the common functions of the micro-processors including cache, register remapping, predication, pipelining, threading, multi-core and processor interconnects, seeing where they are the same and where they are different. We will discuss 64-bit technology in detail, working through the marketing hype to understand the reality for each processor type.

A Survey of Virtualization Technologies

This seminar surveys the server virtualization technologies available in the industry today, including hard partitioning, soft (virtual) partitioning, micro-partitioning and resource partitioning. You will learn the common functions of this virtualization for the servers and operating systems available from Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Sun Microsystems and Unisys, as well as the software technologies available from EMC VMware, Hewlett-Packard Virtual Machines, IBM Hypervisor, Microsoft Virtual Server and Xen, seeing where they are the same and where they are different. You will learn the common functions which all of the cluster technologies perform, see where they are the same and where they are different on each platform, and how to match the different technologies to business requirements.

Speaker Bio

Ken Moreau has been with the combined HP for 27 years, starting with Digital Equipment in 1979 as an Educational Services developer of Computer Based Instructional software. Ken was with the VAX DEBUG group for 4 years, and transferred to a PreSales Solutions Architect position in 1990. Ken has focused on high availability solutions across the industry for the last 10 years, and has been an OpenVMS Ambassador since 1992.

Biography: Clair Grant is the Technical Leader for the OpenVMS Base Operating System and Project Leader of the OpenVMS Kernel Group. From 2001-2004 he was the Project Leader for porting the OpenVMS base operating system to HP Integrity Servers.

Mr. Grant received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.A. from the Univ. of Maine. He is in his 31st year working for Digital/Compaq/HP, the first 10 years on TOPS-20 and the last 20+ years on OpenVMS. His previous major projects include DECnet, clusters, storage management, security, Galaxy, NUMA, and porting OpenVMS from VAX to Alpha.
